Test and tag is the process of visually and electrically checking the safety of portable electrical appliances. According to the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld), as an employer, you must regularly inspect and test specified electrical equipment and safety switches in your workplace.

The rules and regulations differ from trade to trade (e.g. construction standards for testing and tagging differ from service and office standards) which is why only a qualified and experienced tradesperson can legally test and tag electrical equipment. It is an offence under the Electrical Safety Act 2002 to repair electrical equipment unless you have the appropriate electrical work licence. Once tested, the item receives a durable tag with the testing date and next scheduled test and inspection date clearly visible. 

As mentioned above, each industry has their own set of rules and regulations for testing and tagging. At North Lakes & Surrounds Electrical, we are equipped and trained to assist with construction, manufacturing, office and service work industries. For double insulated manufacturing work and service work (if no safety switch) 12 months is the maximum term between each test and tag.

For non-double insulated manufacturing work and construction work (transportable structures, fixed and transportable equipment and construction wiring) it is 6 months. Office work (if no safety switch) can have a maximum term of five years. There also intervals for testing type 1 and type 2 safety switches.
